Alan Kazuta started the North Delta Shotokan Karate Club in June of 1984 after practicing for thirteen years at the University of British Columbia under the instruction of Norman Welch, Don Gee and Don Jurchuk.
Practices are led by seniors Alan Kazuta and Ching Wee and are held at the North Delta Recreation Centre. Over the past twenty years, many members have practiced at North Delta including a large number of younger members since the youth class (for 10- to14-year olds) was added in 1990. In the past few years, the youth class has regularly boasted between 20 to 30 members. A number of these youth have continued on to the adult class.
North Delta is proud to have been recognized as the Dojo of the Year for the Canada West Region on two occasions. North Delta members have been responsible for the administration of special training sessions in Canada West since the dojo was started.
On June 6, 2004 the North Delta dojo celebrated its 20th anniversary
by having an exchange practice led by Norman Welch followed by a barbecue
for all participants, past members, family and friends.
