Ryan Hill, dojo leader
Godan (5th degree black belt)
Ryan Hill began practicing karate as a teenager in Kamloops in 1983. He was awarded black belt the same summer that he graduated high school, and then spent one year in Tokyo practicing almost daily at the Waseda University Karate Club. Upon returning to Canada in 1988, Ryan joined the UBC Shotokan Karate Club, where he was an assistant instructor until 1999. After spending several years outside of BC, including starting and leading a highly successful dojo in Montreal, he returned to Vancouver in 2007 and re-joined the UBC dojo. Ryan became official leader at UBC in 2012.
Ryan has had the opportunity to practice karate throughout North America as well as in Japan and Europe. He was a member of the first place Canada West time in the 1995 Nisei week tournament in Los Angeles, the longest-running karate tournament in the United States. His experience, together with his passion and commitment to honest practice, make him an extremely effective and inspiring karate instructor.
