University of B.C. Shotokan Instructors

Joel Nitikman, Dojo Leader - Yodan (4th degree black belt)

Joel Nitikman walked into the U.B.C. dojo on Monday, September 18, 1985. It is appropriate that Joel remembers his exact start date, because he is known for his organisational skills, and therefore he has been an instrumental leader at the U.B.C. dojo since 1989, when he became a shodan. In 1995, Joel was awarded the Canada West regional award for his dedication to the organisation. This tradition has continued, for he was also a key organiser for the Canada Shotokan 25th anniversary celebration.

Joel has had the opportunity to go to many international events, such as Harmony 1990, Israel's 25th anniversary, and also to visit Waseda University and to participate in Nisei week, where he was a member of the first place Canada West team in 1995. He has also practiced in many dojos throughout North America. These experiences, along with the support of his seniors, especially Don Gee and Norman Welch, have been very important to Joel.
